When is loss of appetite normal, and when is it time for the vet?
Bowl Still Full? Take a Look!
We all know cats and dogs can be finicky about food sometimes. But knowing when it's "just being picky" versus "a real problem" matters!
Situations That Can Be Normal
- A new food switch: A few days of adjustment is normal after changing food.
- Hot weather: Appetite can drop in summer.
- Stress: Moving, a new family member, or guests can affect appetite.
- Heat cycle: Females may eat less during their heat cycle.
When to See a Vet 🚨
Don't wait if any of these apply:
- Not eating at all for more than 24 hours (especially dangerous in cats!)
- Accompanied by lethargy
- Vomiting or diarrhea present
- Noticeable weight loss
- Not drinking water (very urgent!)
- Signs of a mouth/dental problem (drooling, bad breath, pain while eating)
A Special Warning for Cats! 🐱
If cats don't eat for more than 48-72 hours, they can develop "hepatic lipidosis" (fatty liver), a very serious condition. If your cat isn't eating, please don't wait!
Things You Can Try at Home
- Warm the food slightly (boosts smell and appetite)
- Try hand-feeding
- Try a different texture/flavor
- Create a calm feeding environment
