Pet care in hot weather
Summer Is Here, Paws Are Sweating!
Hot weather is tough on us — even tougher on our furry friends! Here's what you need to know to protect them.
Signs of Heatstroke 🚨
- Excessive/rapid panting
- Heavy drooling
- Red tongue and gums
- Stumbling, loss of coordination
- Vomiting, diarrhea
- Loss of consciousness
EMERGENCY ACTION: Move to a cool spot, apply wet towels, get to a vet immediately!
At-Risk Groups
- Short-nosed breeds (Pug, Bulldog, Persian...)
- Senior pets
- Overweight pets
- Thick/dark-coated pets
Summer Tips ☀️
Walks:
- Early morning or late evening
- The 5-second asphalt rule
- Bring plenty of water
At home:
- Fresh water always available
- Provide a cool spot (AC, fan, cool floor)
- Ice cubes/frozen treats
Never:
- ❌ NEVER leave in a vehicle! (even 5 minutes can be fatal!)
- ❌ No midday walks
- ❌ Don't shave (sunburn risk!)
Water Activities 💦
A pool/sea is great for dogs, but don't let them drink chlorinated/salt water, and dry their ears afterward.
