Diarrhea is one of the most common reasons for a vet visit. It can sometimes be a simple upset, sometimes a sign of a serious illness.
Types of Diarrhea
Small-intestine diarrhea:
- Large volume, watery
- Normal or slightly increased frequency
- Weight loss possible
Large-intestine diarrhea:
- Small amounts, frequent
- May contain mucus
- May contain fresh blood
Possible Causes
- Diet change: A sudden food switch
- Food intolerance/allergy
- Dietary indiscretion (eating garbage)
- Parasites: Giardia, worms
- Infections: Viral, bacterial
- Stress: New environment, guests
- Serious illnesses: Pancreatitis, IBD, tumor
What You Can Do at Home
- 12-24 hours off food (in adults)
- Keep water available (dehydration risk!)
- Then a bland diet: Boiled chicken + rice (50-50)
- Small portions, frequent meals
- Probiotics can help
Situations Needing URGENT Vet Care 🚨
- Bloody diarrhea (fresh red or black)
- Diarrhea in young animals (they dehydrate fast!)
- Severe diarrhea lasting more than 24 hours
- Vomiting + diarrhea together
- Lethargy, exhaustion
- Fever
Bring a Stool Sample!
Bring a fresh stool sample if possible — very valuable for parasite testing!
If diarrhea lasts more than 24 hours, don't wait!
