Congratulations! Meeting your new family member is exciting. Here's everything you need to know for the first weeks!
The First 24-48 Hours
- Stay calm: A new environment is stressful — give it time
- Safe space: Start with a small room
- Basic needs: Water, food, litter box/toilet area
- Observe: Watch eating, drinking, and toilet habits
First Vet Visit (Within the First Week!)
- General health check
- Fecal parasite test
- Vaccine schedule planning
- Nutrition counseling
- Spay/neuter planning
Vaccine Schedule 💉
Cats and Dogs:
- 6-8 weeks: First combination vaccine
- 10-12 weeks: 2nd combination
- 14-16 weeks: 3rd combination + rabies
- Then annual boosters
Nutrition 🍽️
- Choose puppy/kitten food
- Age-appropriate portions and meal frequency
- 2-4 months: 4 meals/day
- 4-6 months: 3 meals/day
- 6+ months: 2 meals/day
Socialization (A Critical Period!)
3-14 weeks is critical for dogs, 2-7 weeks for cats!
- Introduce to different people
- Different sounds, environments
- Controlled introductions to other animals
Things to Watch Out For ⚠️
- Don't take outside until vaccines are complete (dogs)
- Dangerous plants, strings, small objects
- Human foods (chocolate, onion, grapes are FORBIDDEN!)
